Florence Italy "The Duomo" You can walk to the top of the Duomo and get a spectacular 360 degree of Florence from the top. On the way up the corridors and stairs to the top you enter the dome area and can walk around the inside edge which gives you a closer view of the fresco. The problem is the walkway is only one person wide! I was trying to take some photos and holding up some American tourists who were not very patient.....I restrained myself from throwing him over the railing.....I hope we don't see each other in the firery inferno depicted on the dome!

Cindy, Lincoln, Joe, Becky in the Blue Mountains. Becky grew up on the eastern flank of these mountains in Monticello, Utah. I think she was raised by a cinnamon colored bear and a old uranium miner!

The locals talk of the resididual effects of the Uranium boon just like the folks around south western Utah talk of the down wind effect of the nuclear bomb testing from Nevada.

The garden continues to live. I have been watering every 4 days for 1.5 hours. The snap peas are all harvested, the first beets are history, but I have a couple more rows that are almost big enough for greens. TURNIPS: When I mention turnip most people say, "I heard of a turnip but I've never eaten one."

The three typs of lettuce was pretty good until about a mont ago. when it warms up or gets to big it becomes bitter. I'll handle lettuce differently next time.

The swiss chard you cannot give away! Do not plant unless you know a good way to prepare it. The beet greens are better.The onions are doing well. Cucumbers (Armenian), along wit the pole beans are climbing and just starting to produce. The sweet corn should be ready in a week....the stalks are not very tall but there are ears on everyone.

Tomatoes plants, four varieties were planted, are loaded. We have just started to pick. The ground squirels are not picking, just eating a little on the yellow ones.

This Memorial day I remember my dad, Bob Dalton who served in the army during WWII. Boot camp training was at Camp Pendleton in southern California. He ended up in Nome, Alaska with a few other soldiers. He said that if there would have been a base any farther north he would have been sent there.

I believe that my dad was patriotic because he loved southern Utah, his home base in St. George, the environment of the Western United States, Dixie college, books and education, especially the humanities, English literature, democratic party politics, and his family history. He didn't wear his patriotism very far out on his sleeve, maybe because it wasn't political correct for him.....?

Dad died on September 10, 2001....it has been almost ten years. His green granite head stone is stained with hard water from the Dixie sun and water, I still miss him, admire him, and know that he tried very hard to be a good father. I hope that he enjoyed the journey of his life. I admire his work ethic, intellect, love for family, giving spirit, frugality, attempt at creativity in gardening and auto mechanics, and his love for me. I believe he is keeping in touch with my progress..............Linc

This is the infamous bear claw poppy growing in the cryptobiotic soil south of St. George, Utah.

Beautiful little thing is a thorn in the side for many people. It is a protected species and thrives where recreationalists like to ride off-road. This land area is now fenced off and access is suppose to be restricted.

Yesterday I hitched the "car hauler" trailer on the truck ball and heeaded out to Provo to pick up the Camry that died on I15 freeway in Northern Utah. The car engine is probably toast....but what the hay, the kids said it was an old grandma car.

It rained, slushed, and snowed all the way there and back to Black Rock Ridge. It was a beautiful drive. Talk about GREEN. It has been one of the wettest winter/springs on record in the state.

Nice fertile, loamy, dark, topsoil, the type that you really like to work. Before I broke the ground, the surface looked a little rocky but it turned into a gravel pit. I used forklift tines to break the ground, roto tilled with my new Husquevarna tiller, then raked and shoveled like a madman. I hauled 8 tons of mulch from the St. George recycling facility and 6 tons of sand from Sun Rock....its growing!

Armenian climbing cucumbers, onion starts from Ron Larson down on 600 South. Ron has a heck-of-a-garden behind his house which is fed by a well. I got 300 onion starts, garlic starts, and a few Jerusalem artichoke starts from him. The artichokes are seen in the next image. Ron has been gardening in the same area for 50 plus years, he knows what, where, and when to plant.

Summer camp out on the North rim of the Grand Canyon. Scott, aka NATURE BOY and Rachel wanted to try a night in the sticks to see how their little 6 month old Stella would do. Life drawing SUU March 2009

Last fall I decided that if I was going to get any art work done at all that I probably would need to be motivated. I cannot seem to do it on my own so I signed up for a life drawing class at Southern Utah University. The class was twice a week in the afternoons from 3 to 6 pm with a lab from 7-10pm on one night. I spent a lot of moolah on diesel fuel driving up and back 3 times a week...that's around 350 miles per week at $3 a gallon, my truck gets about 15 miles per gallon...you mathematicians calculate that for me. Anyhow, overall it was a productive and worthwhile experience.

I was very impressed with the quality of work form the students who really do not have the opportunity to draw from the figure much. The instructor ran a great class, was always there on time and the model was on time and ready to work.

During the month of May I took a little drive out south of town on the Mt. Trumbull road. I could see dust being kicked up in the distance in the Main Street Valley area. These two were having a head butting contest for some unknown reason to me....testosterone, playing, goofing off, showing off, or something. My presence did not seem to make much difference to them. However, I did not want to get up into their faces with the camera so I held my distance

In 1862 Christensen did stage painting for a theatre in Springville, Utah.[8]
The first major art work that Christensen undertook while in Utah was a commission from Dimick B. Huntington to do a collection of paintings from the Bible and Book of Mormon. This was done in collaboration with Dan Weggeland.[9]
Christensen is best known for his Mormon Panorama, a series of 23 large paintings that depict the history of the church. Christensen also painted scenes from the Book of Mormon such as Nephi and Zoram Return with the Record.[10] There was a shole series of Book of Mormon paintings. They were originally issued by the Sunday School for use in classrooms and were latter issued in lithography form.[11]
Christensen began touring with the Mormon panorama in 1878. The panorama was 175 feet (53 m) long. Christensen would transport it about Utah, Idaho and Wyoming, giving presentations along with the panorama. He did this during the winter when he was not busy working on his farm.[12] After Christensen's death the panorama was stored away. Many years latter it was discovered again and brought back to light, partly by the efforts of Boyd K. Packer. It would gain its fullest recognition almost a century latter when it would be showed at the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York City.[13]
Christensen also painted some of the murals in the Manti and St. George Temples.[14][15] Christensen also did paintings for the Manti Tabernacle.
Another theme of some of Christensen's paintings was Manti and its surroundings.[16][17]
Christensen often collaborated with Dan Weggeland in his work in Utah.

Christensen, Carl C. Anthon(1831-1912)
Carl Christian Anton Christensen was born in Denmark in 1832. He studied painting and toy making at the Academy of Art in Copenhagen. In 1850, he became a member of the Latter-day Saint (LDS) Church and served an LDS mission to Vest-Sjelland, Denmark. After returning home, he joined an emigrant company that took him to England and eventually to New York. From New York, he and his wife, Elsie Scheel, traveled to Nauvoo, Illinois, where they purchased a handcart and traveled by foot to Utah. He arrived in Utah with the "Danish flag flying from his cart, his trousers flapping in tatters about his legs."
During his trek, Christensen made many sketches of the American scenery and the events that happened along the journey, but it was not until the 1860s that he had the opportunity to paint again. Little about C. C. A. Christensen's first years in Utah is known. Many years passed between his arrival in 1857 and any public exhibition of his paintings.
LDS pioneer and religious themes dominate Christensen's work. Perhaps his greatest achievement is Mormon Panorama, a monumental narrative that tells in twenty-two 8' x 12' scenes about the history of the LDS Church from Joseph Smith's vision in Palmyra, New York, to the arrival of the LDS pioneers in the Great Salt Lake Valley. To make transportation of the panorama easier, the scenes were attached in sequence as a continuous scroll on a roller, and the artist and panorama toured in Arizona, Idaho, Colorado, and Utah (1869-1890).
The pioneer experience was a favorite theme of Christensen's in smaller works as well. Typical are two paintings from the 1890s: Handcart Pioneer's First View of Salt Lake Valley (1890, SMA) and Winter Quarters (1891, SMA).
"C. C. A.," as he was called by historians in his later life and after his death, was one of the first artists employed to paint scenery for the Salt Lake Theater. He also worked on decoration for the St. George, Manti, and Logan LDS temples.
Christensen's work has a naive, or primitive, quality that stems from his simple treatment of anatomy and perspective, which he learned during his early artistic training in Denmark. A genre artist by nature, his paintings, or scenes from daily life, reflect great narrative skill that earns him respect as a visual historian of his people.

A few weeks ago while driving out on old highway 91 toward Utah hill I pulled into the Shivwit cemetery to take a look and snoop around a little. The cemetery grounds are somewhat asymetrical, primitive, and seem a little neglected. However, I have seen people there caring for individual grave sites and leaving personal items on the red dirt mounds. As I walked between the chunks of sandstone, weathered wood, and contemporary markers I came upon the name of a person I new when I was in junior high school. The name is Lyman Smokey. Along with his name, date of birth and death, was engraved US army WWII. Woah! This set me back on my feet. The moment was quite emotional . All I new of Lyman Smokey was his alcoholism. To me as a boy he was a drunk. He would buy alcohol for kids at school if they gave him the money up front and if he could keep a bottle for himself. In time I had forgotten about Smokey, but I never forgot the rythmn of his name. I knew nothing of his life, his history, his family, his feelings, emotions, or personality. Today, I know he is dead, he was a veteran of WWII who served the United States of America as a soldier from southern Utah. From this accidental meeting I feel a need to know more clearly who this man really is.

Lincoln and Cindy decide to make Monument Valley their anniverary destination. Why, you might ask, the heck if we know. Heading East from Page, Arizona on SR98 you pass Kaibito, Square Butte, and Porcupine Spring. Turn north at Begay Windmill towards Inscription House Ruin, this has been closed for the last 10 years because of vandalism we were told by a lady at the market/laundermat. 50 miles north of here is Navajo Mountain, Utah. The road has recently been paved to the Utah border. I've read that this is the most reemote school in Utah.Just north of Navajo Mountain. Behind Cindy Are the Canyons of Lake Powell, Escalante, and the San Juan River drainage.

Back on SR160 between Navajo National Monument and Kayenta I spotted these fabrics blowing in the wind in the barbed wire fence. A great image against the sandstone redges in the background. I drove for a while past the image decided I had to turn around and shoot it. I'm glad I did-one of the best shots on the trip

I drove over to Escalante from St. George the other day to meet with a woman who is building a home. She owns a design firm and aa art gallery in Tampa, Florida. She, like numerous others have decided to make Escalante and other "red rock" areas their homes away from home. Her new spread is 40 acres on the southwest of town on the old city dump, hence the name "the tin can ranch".

On the trip over, which is 200 miles miles, I stopped at the white rocks just north of the town of Henriville, which is just past cannonville, which is just past Tropic, which is just past Bryce Canyon National Park. Check out the pictures.

* The Isenheim Altar. Matthias Grunewald. 1512. Unterlinden Museum in Colmar, Alsace. Originally in the chapel of the hospital for incurable diseases in the monastery of Saint Anthony. The brilliant altar is one of the most complex structures ever created in western religious art. It has two sets of painted folding wings, which, when opened, reveal three carved wooden and gilded statues of saints. There are also two side panels and a predella. The Crucifixion is horrifying. Christ looks not just beaten and tortured but diseased. In the Resurrection He is an unearthly radiant white. At the lower left of the Resurrection sits a naked man whose body is covered with running sores. He is one of the patients in the hospital, afflicted with syphilis, who gazes upon the pure white Christ knowing that in death he will become radiant and also cured. Being cured of human diseases through a devotion of the suffering Christ is the fundamental story of this great work of art.

Artist Robert Smithson's Spiral Jetty in the Great Salt Lake. The lake was at a very low level and the jetty was completely exposed. Atourist helicopter approached while we were on the hillside taking photos and kicked up a little dust(mixed with ? from dugway proving grounds)

Back when I was young, in the mid to early 60's, we would spend part of the summer "helping" grandpa on the farm. On ocassion we traveled to Sanpete county and do stuff on the dry farm, I guess there wasn't any water there. I remember a hay derrick, alot of broken down tractors and trucks that were used for parts. Someone lived in the house but I don't remember who it was. There was a small dairy queen like store that we yearned to go to.
A couple of years back when Cindy and I were traveling back from SLC we side stepped over to Moroni to see if the brain recognized anything. Much to my surprise, when we passed OHD's farm, immediate recognition. It had not changed much in 45 years. As a matter of fact a man was out in front of the property fixing a fence with baling wire and twine, just like grandpa.
The man's name was Staples. His dad had purchased the place from OHD in 1968. There was a caretaker in the home when it had sold to the Staples. When they went to take possession of the place the caretaker and family was still there. It sounded as though this was unexpected. They made arrangements for the caretaker to move into a trailer that was down the road a piece. It was good to see the place and feel my history

JL picked up this "hiker" traveling the double track dirt road in Moenave and let him out at Tuba City. The road was washboard the entire 10 miles or so. Free ride-who cares, right!
West of Cedar Ridge, AZ. Looking down Salt Canyon to the Little Colorado River. This is close to the confluence of the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon. We were stopped by a Navajo man in a pick-up truck coming the other way on a lone dirt road. He was curious as to what we were doing and why we were out there. We explained what we were up to and off we went. We had the feeling that we were in a foreign land, trespassing where we were not quite welcome. We felt this on a number of occasions

Tuba city , Arizona There was a neighborhood flee market in full swing when we arrived in town. The "barker" who was announcing from the back of a van shouted, "come and get your indian fry bread, it is hot, round, black and greasy, just like your navajo girl friend". jl will attest to to all of that! The fry bead was deep fried in what? Maybe mutton tallow. On the fry bread was grilled mutton, with a large jalepeno pepper, potatoe and corn. Joe had the combo which included a Sheep's rib which had exactly 0 meat on it. The item which he is trying to pull apart with his teeth is the intestine of the sheep wrapped tightly with something special. "You've go to experience for yourselves" to get the full effect. Salt was needed.

Mojave county patrolman were on the prowl near Colorado City, Arizona. There is a speed trap between the Triple cities of CC, Hilldale, and Centennial park. I have never seen Joe this meek and submissive to authority. "Officer, really I didn't see any signs which indicated a change in the speed, I had my speed set at 57 mph, that is well below the speed limit." Where was the sign? I'm so so sorry I will pay more attention next time, thank you for the warning.

Joe and Linc (jl) leave southern Utah and head into northern Arizona seeking adventure and a break from all the issues of daily living. There are a million miles of double track dirt roads that criss-cross through the reservfation. There also are a million night stars each evening. What a place!
